Why do you dance? I ask myself that question almost everyday. Most people dance for fame, for money, to just be able to perform, but what do you get out of it? I’ve learned from past experience that an applause at the end of your set is just an agreement by the audience that it was a performance, but it being any good is a mystery. Does performing in front of an audience of hundreds or thousands stroke your ego enough to signify that you’re dope? I’m not sure about what most dancers believe but I think most dancers can’t distinguish who or what their dancing for: themselves, or the people watching.
I’ve learned that performing will get you attention, that’s for sure.. but is that any fulfilling? I believe that the audience should enjoy what they see. The idea of training in foundation and developing the skills needed to create a style is essential for all dancers. These tools help embody the overall performance of a dancer to help create the pictures the dancer creates in his/her mind. But are these tools put to good use? Not always. Dancers have nearly become selfish not being able to help the people watching enjoy what they do.
I dance to express myself however the music moves me, but at the same time hope that the audience watching enjoys what I do. I took the time to learn foundation in Hip Hop dance styles reaching down to its very roots learning from the OGs (originators) of the styles and tried my best to create my own. This is one of the main reasons why I joined Poreotics (Poreotix). When I had first seen them perform, they were the epitome of what I wanted to do, there were not many crews who could have topped them at the time of their first performance because the caliber of their set was so high. They were strong in foundation and entertained the audience as well.
Now there’s been alot of controversy about Poreotix being too funny and that they should take it serious some time. I disagree. What’s the point of watching dance when you’re not being entertained? Do you enjoy watching serious dancing? I know some people out there like that but the majority wants to be entertained. Expressing yourself honestly with your craft, being with the music, and being extremely creative are many factors that make you a good dancer but does it fulfill you at all? As I’ve said before one of my teachers, AKA Jekle, had asked me “are you dancing for yourself or are you dancing for them?” That question has been stuck in my mind ever since and it guides me to become a better dancer for the people everyday. I believe Poreotics has the ability to do both and deserves the respect that we need.
Now that I’ve reiterated what I’ve ask you, do feel your dancing for a positive cause?
yea, i felt like writing this for awhile and now that I’d had a couple drinks it helps me putt out crazy stuff more.
